The leading men are now in the climb to Kloster Lluc in the Tramuntana mountains.

Das Rennen der Männer beim Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca ist vor allem eines: schnell. Michael Raelert macht es rasant. Der Doppel-Weltmeister aus Rostock ist als Dritter aus dem Wasser gekommen und hat auf dem Rad gleich gezeigt, worum es ihm heute geht - um den Sieg. Nach 10 Kilometern auf dem Rad lag er mit 30 Sekunden vorne, nach 20 Kilometern durch das mallorquinische Flachland waren es bereits 2:30 Minuten. Und nun jagt er hinauf in Richtung Kloster Lluc.

Im Männerrennen liegt Michael Raelert klar vorne - doch dahinter wird es im Anstieg nach Kloster Lluc schon deutlich enger: Hinter Raelerts Einzelverfolger Vander Hoogerstraete und der Dreier-Verfolgergruppe mit Johann Ackermann folgt mit gut 1 Minute Abstand eine erste größere Gruppe mit etwa 10 Athleten. Dahinter ganz allein kommt Lothar Leder und wiederum dahinter - ebenfalls 1 Minute zurück - eine weitere Gruppe mit rund 10 Athleten.

Mal ein Wort zum Wetter: In den vergangenen Tagen gingen die Temperaturen immer bis auf 30 Grad hinauf - es war trocken und heiß. Und vor allem war es sehr windig. Heute Morgen wehte in der Bucht von Alcudia bei knapp 20 Grad ein leichtes lüftchen. Aber sowohl bei den Temperaturen als auch beim Wind dürfte sich noch etwas tun...

2300 athletes are on the way to their personal finishline today at Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca. 2100 amateur athletes, 45 pro athletes and 50 realy teams - including a relay team of Thomas Cook that is lead by Andreas Raelert. The winner of last year's race here in Alcudia will be th swimmer of his team. He starts with the others "Iron Teams" at 9.30.

Der Vorjahressieger des Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca startet mit einer Staffel von Thomas Cook. Andreas ist der Startschwimmer, nach ihm folgt Volker Schmidtgen von Thomas Cook auf dem Rad - als Läufer ist Frank Busemann, Olympiazweiter im Zehnkampf von 1996, anschließend auf dem Weg.

Michael Raelert is flying. He is a the top of the hill and is moving downhill in direction to Inca now. Our spotters were a little bit behind him when the started into the uphill part - and had problems uphill (!) to catch up with him again...

Update from the women's race: Emma-Kate Lidbury seems to be really relaxed in the climb our spotter Andrea Steinbecher says. The first three women are close together. They can't see each other because of some turns in the uphill section. Between Emma-Kate Lidbury and Natascha Schmitt there are about 300 meters - and Sofie Goos is 300 meters behind Natascha Schmitt.

Andrea reports: The girls seem to be powerful and able to smile. She has talked to Natascha Schmitt. Natascha feels good and stays as relaxed as possible in the climb.

Im Frauenrennen sind die ersten drei Athletinnen dicht beieinander, aber sie können sich aufgrund der vielen Kurven im Anstieg zum Kloster Lluc nicht sehen. Emma-Kate Lidbury liegt rund 300 Meter vor der Frankfurterin Natascha Schmitt, wiederum knapp 300 Meter dahinter folgt die Belgierin Sofie Goos. Andrea Steinbecher berichtet von unterwegs, dass gerade Natascha gut ausieht und entspannt wirkt. Schmitt hat gerade ihr Studium beendet und möchte heute richtig Gas geben.

Richt Gas gibt übrigens - wie überraschend ! - Michael Raelert im Bergabbereich hinunter in Richtung der Ortschaften Caimari und Selva. Wo es geht, fährt er Vollgas, die Serpentinen lassen sich gut ansteuern, der Asphalt ist neu - da lässt er es derart krachen, dass unser Motorrad nicht mitkommt.

We hear that Michael Raelert has already reached the city centre of Inca, one of the bigger cities on Mallorca. That means that he has passed Km 50.

Michael Raelert keeps the title in the family

Michael Raelert celebrated a great victory at Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca. The two-time winner of the World Championship followed in the footsteps of his brother Andreas who won the debut race in Alcudia in 2011. Especially on the bike Michael Raelert dominated the pro field. The 31-year old started the run with a lead of more than 10 minutes. At the end he won in 3:57:08 hours ahead of Michael Göhner from Germany who needed 4:10:11 hours. "It was my strategy to to go as ahrd as I can on the bike", Michael Raelert said at the press conference. He came out of the water in third position (24:39 minutes) and took over the lead in the transition zone. Tom Vander Hoogerstraete had the fastest swim of the day in 24:35 minutes ahead of Ben Allen from Great Britain (24:37).

On the bike Michael Raelert pushed hard in the tough uphill section towards Kloster Lluc in the Tramuntana mountains and extended his lead especially in this part of the race. Behind him there were some chasing groups with strong competitors. But: "We had two different races", Michael Göhner said after the race. Michael Raelert was leading his own race - and behind him there was a second one. Due to hot conditions Michael Raelert missed his goal to be faster than his brother was the year before. Andreas Raelert won in 2011 in 3:53:07 hours. "Wasn't the bike course a little bit longer today?", Michael Raelert asked laughing after the race, "and wasn't the run course a little bit longer this year?" Michael Raelert rode the bike course in 2:13:26 hours and ran the half marathon in 1:14:27 hours.

In 3:57:08 hours Michael Raelert claimed the victory at the european season opener on Mallorca in a dominant way. Michael Göhner, who decided to participate in Alcudia only a few days before the race, completed the german double on the podium with a fast half marathon. He reached the finishline ahead of a strong and almost unknown athlete from Great Britain. Ben Allen claimed third place in his first Ironman 70.3. "It was a last-minute-decision", Ben Allen said at the press conference. And a good one - the proof was his third place in 4:12:51 hours.

In the women's race Emma-Kate Lidbury from Great Britain defended her title as dominant as possible. She came out the water in first position (27:10 minutes), she never looked back on the bike and ran the title home in the final half marathon. "I'm really pleased to defend my title", Emma-Kate Lidbury said. She was especially thinking about her injured knee - in T2 Lidbury had a collision with another athlete and hit her knee with her chain ring. "It cut my knee open", she said. She started the run with pain and a lot of uncertainty. "I thought that I'm not going to finish that race." Finally she did not feel the pain during the run. "The adrenalin kicked in", Lidbury said. Although her knee was badly injured she managed a fast run in 1:28:01 hours. Her bike split (2:37:03 hours) was the fastest of the day. Lidbury celebrated the victory in 4:39:05 hours. In second position there was Tine Deckers from Belgium who needed 4:43:18 hours. Deckers ran on the podium ahead of the young german Natascha Schmitt (4:47:11 hours). The winner of the first edition of Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca, Andreas Raelert, was also part of the race: He was the swimmer in a relay team of Thomas Cook. Andreas Raelert swam the course in 26:21 minutes.

Michael Raelert tritt in die mallorquinischen Fußstapfen seines Bruders

Michael Raelert hat souverän den Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca für sich entschieden. Der zweimalige Weltmeister im Ironman 70.3 setzte sich bereits beim Radfahren so entscheidend ab, dass er das mallorquinische Erbe seines Bruders Andreas auf dominante Weise antrat. Andreas Raelert, der in diesem Jahr als Schwimmer für eine Staffel von Thomas Cook an den Start ging und den Schwimmkurs in 26:21 Minuten absolvierte, hatte die erste Auflage des Rennens in Alcudia im Vorjahr in 3:53:07 Stunden gewonnen.

Nach dem Schwimmen lag Michael Raelert noch auf dem dritten Platz. Der Rostocker kam nach 24:39 Minuten aus dem Wasser der Bucht von Alcudia, der Belgier Tom Vander Hoogestraete (24:35 Minuten) und der Brite Ben Allen (24:37) lagen vor ihm - und bald hinter ihm. "Ich wollte auf dem Rad so hart fahren wie ich nur konnte", erläuterte Michael Raelert später seine Taktik. Und er hielt sich dran: Bereits in der ersten Wechselzone stürmte Michael Raelert von dannen. Im Anstieg zum Kloster Lluc setzte sich der 31-Jährige dann richtig deutlich ab. Als er nach dem Radfahren seine Zeitfahrmaschine in der Wechselzone abstellte, war von den Konkurrenten lange nichts zu sehen - der Vorsprung betrug bereits mehr als 10 Minuten. In 2:13:26 Stunden fuhr der deutsche Topfavorit die schnellste Radzeit und ließ in 1:14:27 Stunden den schnellsten Halbmarathon folgen. "War die Radstrecke heute nicht deutlich zu lang?", fragte Raelert nach dem Rennen scherzhaft in Anspielung darauf, dass er die Vorjahreszeit seines Bruder nicht unterbieten konnte. "Und war die Laufstrecke heute nicht auch deutlich zu lang?"

In 3:57:08 Stunden siegte Raelert schließlich deutlich - vor dem Deutschen Michael Göhner, der nach 4:10:11 Stunden ins Ziel am Hafen von Alcudia einlief. "Wir haben heute zwei unterschiedliche Rennen gesehen", erklärte Michael Göhner, der amtierende EM-Zweite im Ironman. Zu weit weg war Michael Raelert im Rennen von der Konkurrenz. Für Göhner war es ein guter erster Test für den Ironman in Klagenfurt Anfang Juli, er hatte sich erst wenige Tage vor dem Rennen in Alcudia dazu entschlossen, beim Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca zu starten. Ebenfalls kurzfristig hatte sich der Brite Ben Allen zu seinem ersten Start überhaupt auf dieser Distanz entschieden. In 4:12:51 Stunden folgte er als Dritter aufs Podium und wusste, dass die Entscheidung richtig gewesen war.

Im Rennen der Frauen bestimmten deutsche Athletinnen das Rennen erheblich mit - den Sieg feierte jedoch wie im Vorjahr die Britin Emma-Kate Lidbury. In 4:39:05 Stunden wiederholte sie ihren Sieg - und das, obwohl sie sich bei einer Kollission mit einem anderen Athleten in der zweiten Wechselzone das Knie am Kettenblatt ihres Rads aufgeschnitten hatte. "Ich habe gedacht, dass ich dieses Rennen nicht zu Ende bringe", sagte die Titelverteidigerin, die bereits nach dem Schwimmen (27:10 Minuten) führte und auf dem Rad souverän an der Spitze blieb (2:37:03 Stunden). "Aber nach kurzer Zeit hatte ich einen Adrenalinkick", sagte Lidbury, "da habe ich die Schmerzen nicht mehr gespürt." In 1:28:01 Stunden lief sie den Halbmarathon entlang der Bucht von Alcudia und damit souverän zum Sieg. Tine Deckers aus Belgien wurde in 4:43:18 Stunden Zweite, auf dem dritten Rang folgte die starke Frankfurterin Natascha Schmitt, die in 4:47:11 Stunden aufs Podium lief.
