  • Good Morning and welcome to the 2011 Subaru Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon. It's a beautiful morning here in Cambridge, MD. Over 2000 athletes are competing today.
  • Choptank sunrise

  • Here is a shot of the Choptank River before sunrise this morning. The water temperature is 82 degrees this morning - nice and warm!
  • This field is packed with a stellar list of pros so competition is going to be fierce! Returning this year are the Kiwi Champions from last year. - Terenzo Bozzone and Sam Warriner. Warriner will be looking to beat out World Ironman Champion Mirinda Carfrae. After having heart surgery, Warriner narrowly won Ironman New Zealand last March, finishing just 26 seconds in front of Carfrae. Warriner will have to beat out Amanda Stevens, 2010 Ironman 70.3 US Pro Champion. Tyler Stewart should give the women a challenge on the bike course as she broke the world record last month at Ironman Texas for the fastest fiche split. Other contenders include Desiree Ficker, Tenille Hoogland, and Elly Franks
  • Bozzone recently had an Achilles injury and will face stiff competition from an amazing group of pro men, including Richie Cunningham, 2-time Ironman Champion, Chris Legh, and Matt Reed who had 18 wins from 2008 - 2010 and James Cotter who finished 2nd at EagleMan last year. Craig Alexander, 2-time Ford Ironman Champion of 2008 and 2009 was slated to be here, but was unable to make it here due to an illness. Bozzone finished first or second in 11 out of 12 races in 2010. Other notable male pros include James Bowstead, James Duff and Kryov Stanislav.
  •  Two-time defending champion, Terenzo Bozzone - "I love racing here in Cambridge, Maryland at the Eagleman 70.3. this is my fourth year coming back to this event. Firstly I love the heat and this race brings all of it. secondly it attracts a great crowd of competitors age-groupers and Pro's. Vigo the race director looks after the pros very well and the homestays in this area show amazing hospitality."
  • Bozzone -  "Last weekend was a good test to see where things were with my fitness and with my Achilles. I hadn't been able to run since New Orleans 70.3 until a week before Quassy so was a little unsure on where the strength component of my run would be. I think I held it together okay, second fastest run behind big Matty Reed. All in all I am happy with where things are at and looking forward to an exciting second half of the season."
  • National Anthem sung by Amy Dixon, local Wawa employee.
  • Ready to start, pro men are first.
  • And the pro men are off!
  • The pro women are next - 20 seconds to go!
  • Paratriathletes are next.
  • From CAF (Challenged Athletes Foundation) we have 3 athletes, Robin Caruso, Minda Dentler and Jose Ramos. Robin is a mother of two who was hit by a car during a bike ride and suffered partial paralysis. Jose ia a member of the US military who lost his left arm in Iraq while serving our country.
  • Daniel Hathorn, Navy Seal is also competing in the paratriathlete division. Daniel was injured in January, 200. He suffered broken ribs, 2 collapsed lungs, had all bones broken in left side of face which has been reconstructed with 3 plates and 18 screws. He has a severed colar bone, left arm nerve palsey and muscle damage with limtied use of hand and fingers . Previous to Dan's injury, he was a triathlete preparing to get his Pro card. The idea of training for a triathlon was what motivated him to recovery. He is now training to make the Paratriathlete Olympic Team, and would like to be at the Brazil games in 2016. Daniel races for Challenged Athletes Foundation.
  • Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA) is here today to assist Shan Lauer, a 20 year old athlete who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The ASA team consists of Chip Connor (Swim), David Slomkowski (Bike), Ben Mortenson (Run). ASA sponsors free programs, services, and events, which enable challenged athletes to feel the thrill and satisfaction of crossing the finish line.
