IRONMAN World Championship 70.3

  • Docherty is now starting to push towards Alexander and O'Donnell. He's dropped Potts on a climb.

Docherty ran 71 minutes in the extreme heat in Panama this year, so look for him to be one of the fastest here today.
  • Kienle looks really good, but he's got some frighteningly fast runners behind him.

He's actually gained some time in the last mile - his lead is up to 3 minutes now. Docherty is now just a few seconds behind Alexander and O'Donnell, with Potts just five seconds behind.
  • Age group: MICHAEL O'NEIL (30-34) is the first age grouper to be on the way back into town. He has been posting an average mph back into town of 28 - not too shabby!
  • A half mile down the road Potts has lost more time to the group that now includes Docherty, Alexander and O'Donnell.
  • The boys have got things moving again - in the last half mile they've clawed back another 20 seconds on Kienle.
  • Leanda Cave continues to lead the women's race - we'll see her in T2 momentarily.
  • Now it's Docherty who is taking the pace in the chase group.
  • Josh Amberger is in sixth place, with a strong-looking Faris Al-Sultan in seventh.
  • What a race! Craig Alexander is the man now pushing the pace here. These guys look like they are running a 10 km road race, not a half in a 70.3!
  • The word is the men are all yelling for water as they go through the aid stations - the temperature is definitely rising!
  • Leanda

  • Our spotter missed Heather Jackson at the last split - through 3 miles she is 2:20 behind Cave.
  • Melissa Hauthschildt continues to gain time - she's 1:20 behind Heather Jackson now and looks great.
  • Kienle is through 7.8 miles and still has a lead of a couple of minutes, it looks like. Alexander and Docherty will have to go hard right now if they're going to catch the German.
  • Here are the top women through 1.1 miles:

  • Hauschildt currently in third is hitting the aid stations with the same method as Crowie. Grabbing and dumping water over her head at every opportunity.
  • Through 8 miles Craig Alexander has pulled away from Docherty.
  • A half mile further along the road (8.5 miles) Craig Alexander has gained 10 seconds on Kienle - he's at 1:45. Docherty is at 1:55. O'Donnell is at 2:55.
  • Michael Raelert hasn't quit the race - he just passed Richie Cunningham and has moved into the top 10.
  • These were the splits at 7.8 miles - things have changed a bit in the last mile, but this gives us some of the splits for the men in the top-10.

  • Looking at the AG winning times today, no records broken yet. Looks like the extra than normal sizzling conditions this year have been a huge challenge.
  • And just as I say that I am proven wrong. Ellen Hart was here today to defend her 50-54 title. Last year she went 5:04:28. She crossed the line to retain her title and comes away with a new AG record with a time of 5:03:15.
  • How about that! She defended her title, broke her course record AND and at 54 years young Ellen Hart posts the fastest AG female run split of the day with 1:32:22! Very VERY cool...or should I say HOT!
  • Twin sister finishers from Aus, Elizabeth and Bernadette
