  • Welcome to the 2010 Ford Ionman Cozumel

  • 2010 Ford Ironman Cozumel

    Welcome to the second edition of the Ford Ironman Cozumel. It was said last year at the first ever Ironman in Mexico, and worthy to say again; what a location for an Ironman. Tropical Island, Caribbean waters, incredible weather, locals that make you feel you truly welcomed and a community that is reflective of its countries culture and traditions… what else could one ask for.

    The weather forecast for tomorrow’s race is calling for sunny skies and temperatures in 83 F/ 29 C range.

    The professional men and women’s race will start at 6:40 a.m. CST (7:40 Eastern/5:40 Pacific). Our age group race will start at 7:00 a.m. CST.

    IronmanLIVE will have live text coverage of the action from the course, as well as our live Athlete Tracker will be available for those family and friends wanting to follow their athlete’s progress throughout the day online. Photos of the race action and our leader board will be updated regularly.
  • Good morning from Ironman Cozumel. We are now only 5 minutes out from the start of the pro men and women's race here.
  • The 2010 Ford Ironman Cozumel pro race has started in calm waters clears skies.
  • Our age group race will start at 7:00 a.m. with 2253 athletes from 53 countries.
  • Ford Ironman Cozumel Swim Course

  • We should see some fast swim times here again in Cozumel. The long leg of the swim tends to have some current going in the same direction as the swimmers. Last year’s men`s champion, Rutger Beke said he had difficulty keeping up with the current with his stroke because of the swiftness of the current.
  • Women’s swim course record: Bree Wee 46:39 - 2009
  • Men’s swim course record: John Kenny 41:48 - 2009
  • The current weather conditions here in Cozumel have a temperature of 70F/21C with light cloud. The forecast is calling for highs of 80F/27C with a slight chance of precipitation later this afternoon.
  • Because the swim is in the protected waters of a park, we are limited to the safety watercraft on the course. We will not have any information on the leaders until they exit the water. We should see this year’s champion from the Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene, Andy Potts either leading or with the leader(s). If you recall, Potts led the men out of the water in Kona.
  • Waters of Cozumel
    When renowned underwater researcher Jacques Cousteau first visited Cozumel in 1962, it did not take long for him to declare it one of the most spectacular scuba diving areas in the world.

    Since that time, the island has gained an international reputation as one of the premier diving destinations in the Western Hemisphere, attracting thousands of divers and snorkelers to its underwater panorama. In Scuba Diving Magazine ‘s 2008 Top 100 Reader’s Choice Awards, Cozumel was rated as one of the top five dive destinations in the Caribbean based on value, visibility and advanced diving. Reader’s also rated Cozumel among the top ten dive destinations for its marine life, exceptional wall diving and advanced diving. Cozumel dive operators and hotels also placed high on lists for Most Popular Land Based Dive Operators and Most Popular Dive Resorts.

  • Last year’s Ironman Cozumel champion, Yvonne van Vlerken exited the water with that pack of 4 women in a swim time of 59:19, 12th overall.
  • IronmanLIVE was talking to Kate Major before the race this morning as she doing a last minute check of her bike. She reported that she was in a bike accident here in Cozumel on Wednesday. She has a few bruises and a sore foot, but nothing serious and feels good to go today…and yes, the bike is ok.
  • Due to the poor mobile and radio reception out on the bike course, we are only going to have three bike splits available to us for our coverage today.
  • Ford Ironman Cozumel Bike Course

  • Bike course

    The 180 kilometer 3 lap bike will take competitors along the coastline of beaches and resorts and through the town of Cozumel. The first two laps are 63 kilometers each with the third lap of 54 kilometers. Those racing can expect strong gusting side winds that have prompted the organizers to prevent the use of disc wheels for this race.
  • IronmanLIVE is heading from the swim location to finish line. We will be back in 20 minutes once we setup there.
  • IronmanLIVE has made it down to the finish line area.

    It is starting t heat up here in Cozumel - 74F/24C with humidity making it feel much warmer. There is some scattered clouds and light winds this side of the Island.
  • Bike course records from last year

    Yvonne van Vlerken: 5:03:44
    Rutger Beke: 4:34:27
  • We just received a report that Kate Major was the third women out on the bike. She must have lost her timing chip as she recorded no time at the “swim finish” or “bike start” timing mats.
  • Men - Bike 52 KM's

    * ANDY POTTS (#50).2:08:11
    * BALAZS CSOKE (#30) at 2:08:11

    * JUSTIN DAERR (#42) at 2:14:17
    * ANDRIY YASTREBOV (#31) at 2:15:52
  • Correction. We had some misinformation in the women's race at 52 km's.

    Amanda Stevens is leading the women's race. She has a 2:00 advantage over Griesbauer. A chase pack of 5 with van Vlerken, Goos, Wee and Stewart, and we believe that Major is there also, are al 5:00 back to Griesbauer.
  • Women's running order at 52km's

    * AMANDA STEVENS (#39) 2:19:50
    * DEDE GRIESBAUER (#26) at 2:21:50
    * SOFIE GOOS (#29) at 2:27:02
    * BREE WEE (#46) at 2:27:03

    * NICOLE WOYSCH (#27) at 2:32:23
    * BROOKE TVERMOES (#18) at 2:38:04
    * CHARISA WERNICK (#23) at 2:38:32
    * MARIA OMAR SOLEDAD (#55) at 2:38:38
  • In the women's race we are assuming that Major is in that group of women with running times in that 2:27 range for the first 52 km's.
  • We see Csoke, currently in second place in the men’s race, competing in many Ironman 70.3 races. His only Ironman race this year he finished 10th at Ironman Switzerland
  • At 100 km's. Potts and Csoke still remain together with no sign of anyone close to the leading pair.
  • Just going through 100 km's, Brazil’s Rual Furtado has worked his way towards the front and is now in third, 4:15 back to the leading pair of Potts and Csoke.
  • We had report from one of our cameraman, that Kate Major is really falling off the pace.
  • Men - Bike 100 km's

    * ANDY POTTS (#50) at 0:00

    * RAUL PEREIRA FURTADO (#15) at 8:12
  • Sorry for the delay, writing and spotting duties this weekend.

    The women's race has tightened here in Cozumel at 100km's. Stevens is still leading with Griesbauer in hot pursuit only 1:44 back.
    Van Vlerken is moving through the field, 2:38 back with Stewart 3:40 in arrears. Goos rounds out the top-5, 7:00 back to the leader.

  • Mexico’s Ironman - Luis Alvarez

    Mexico City’s Luis Alvarez, who's name appears in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only man to have competed in every Ironman race in the world, finished his 71st Ironman race just last weekend in the Ford Ironman Arizona and hopes to complete his 72nd this weekend.. He also competed in Ironman Florida earlier in the month!
  • We are expecting the lead men into T2 within 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Just received word that Kate Major is in the medical tent and out of the race.
  • MEN:- Bike End

    * OSCAR GALINDEZ (#65) and EDUARDO STURLA (#53) both come into the transition together. They are followed by:
    * MICHAEL LOVATO (#59) at 0:09
    * BALAZS CSOKE (#30) at 0:15
    * ANDY POTTS (#50) at 0:23
    * AXEL ZEEBROEK JACQUES MAURICE (#17) at 3:25
    * RUTGER BEKE (#1) at 6:12
    * JUSTIN DAERR (#42) at 7:10
  • Galindez and Sturla are old foes at Ironman racing. The both are both 3-time Ironman Brazil champions.
