Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore

  • The sell out 2011 Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore will celebrate its fifth anniversary by attracting a stellar line up of the world's Ironman pro athlete stars, including three world champions.

Reigning Ironman 70.3 world champion, Jodie Swallow, headlines the stellar female field. The Brit makes her third visit to Singapore where she won in 2009 and finished second in 2010.

2005 Ironman World Champion, Germany’s Faris al Sultan, is the second world champ registered. Al Sultan Faris is the team founder and leader of Team Abu Dhabi and lives in the UAE when not continuing to win races around the world.

The third world champ is a relatively new face to the Ironman 70.3 scene, but one who will mix this race up. He’s a world aquathlon champion, New Zealand’s Kris Gemmell, a long time winner on the ITU scene worldwide.

Lining up as challengers to these world champs are a number of national champions, Ironman and Ironman 70.3 winners and former Singapore champs, too!

Rebekah Keat (pictured above after her win in 2008) is a former winner in Singapore who followed that win up with a number of top finishes including a runner-up finish to Chrissie Wellington’s world best in 2009 and a win at Ford Ironman Louisville last year.

Also included in the women’s field are Australian’s Michelle Wu, Kirsten Molloy, Rachael Paxton and Alison Fitch going up against a strong Japanese pro contingent that includes Maki Nishiuchi, Megumi Shigaki and Emi Shiono and Germany’s Kristin Moeller.

The men’s race is going to be tough, too. Taking on the world champs are a group of prolific race winners including 2010 Singapore runner up, South Africa’s James Cunnama, New Caledonia’s Patrick Vernay, Australian’s Pete Jacobs, Chris Kemp and Courtney Ogden, and Scotland’s Scott Neyedli.

From veterans to first timers the 33-deep pro field is sure to add excitement, color and an even bigger international flavor. The pro field alone includes 13 of the 69 countries represented in the 2011 Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore.

  • Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore Builds Assistance to Japan

It started with an email from two Japanese pro athletes, husband and wife, Maki and Hiroyuki Nishiuchi, to the organisers of the Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore, an idea on how to assist those affected by the catastrophic events in Japan in recent days. And now the idea has snowballed within Singapore and beyond, with race naming sponsor, Aviva, kick starting an assistance program, contributing $10,000SGD to the Japanese Red Cross for disaster relief.

And now, the idea has grown, with organisers, Hi-Tri (Singapore) also donating $10,000SGD to the disaster relief fund. Further donations are already being made by competitors and friends directly, through the race website at www.ironman703singapore.com .

For the Nishiuchi’s, the problem is personal, with family missing in the affected areas north of Tokyo and for Hi-Tri directors there’s also a personal link. Singapore Race Director, Graeme Hannan was for ten years a major part of Ironman Japan; Registration Director, Nick Munting was Ironmanlive’s man on the ground in for five years - and fellow Hi-Tri director Adrian Mok competed in Ironman Japan in 2008.

Singapore Race Director, Graeme Hannan says, “As has been witnessed by the whole world the tragedy in Japan caused by the earthquakes and tsunami has left tens of thousands of people with nothing!”.

“We hope, in some small way, that our contribution will lead to the triathlon community around the world coming together to help Japan.”
